Inner Imagery – A Powerful Way to Change Your Game - with Bobby Walker
Suppose I told you, there is a powerful new-old idea I think you should be aware of. It is a notion available to all of us that can shape your game and lower your handicap in an astonishing way. What would you say? You would want me to tell you about it, wouldn’t you? That is what I want to share with you over the next year. The idea is a form of “mental activity” some call inner- imaging.
Clearly few of us are capable of whacking a 300+ yard drive straight down the middle of the fairway the way the pros on the Tour do consistently, but there is no reason why we can’t hit an accurate drive 200 to 240 yards. Moreover , virtually half the of a golf score consists of chipping and putting and, no matter how old you might be, you more than likely have the physical capacity and ability to sink a 20 foot putt. Did you ever hit a drive over 200 (or better) yards down the middle of the fairway? Did you ever knock a seven iron up onto the green just a few feet from the flag stick? Did you ever sink a twisting, double-breaking putt from 40 feet? There you go…you have just proven you have that physical capacity and ability.
Whether it is bemoaning over having “shanked” the last shot, the anxiety of the next shot or trying to line up a slippery 4 foot downhiller, the golfer is consistently struggling with self doubt, apprehension, fear of failure and tension.
It is in these areas most golfers seemingly lack that “supremacy” when it comes to their approach to improving their game. Look up that word “supremacy” when you get a chance. Superiority, domination, advantage, power, control….
It is time to stop beating yourself up. Do you realize that in an average 4 hour, 18 hole round of golf the player only hits the ball for 3 or 4 minutes? It is the time between shots that is the “curse” of the golfer. It is in this time period the average golfer can make an enormous difference in his or her game. It is during this time one must find a method to quiet the mind, observe what is happening and control anxiety. Think positively.
In the next six issues Space Coast Golf will pursue these methods. Readers will have the opportunity to take advantage of some of our area professional’s precepts seriously and practice them with an open mind. You will discover that you can lower your handicap substantially. You will discover how a relaxing concentration will improve your game – no gimmicks, no “tips”; it’s simply a matter of trusting yourself and a matter of practicing it.
A very highly thought of professional and a friend of mine shared these secrets with me when he observed what a “head case” I was on the course. He was a very spiritual man and he loaned me a book and asked me to read it. I looked at the preface and frowned; what had this to do with golf? All I can tell you is that when I finished the book, purely out of respect for my friend, I was ever so grateful. I think our readers will be too.
When one learns to apply the concepts steadily and systematically, it solves problems, strengthens minds and improves abilities. The chances for success will increase – I guarantee it!
