Space Coast Women in Defense Announces Their 2015 STEM Innovator Awards

The Space Coast (SC) Women In Defense (WID) is pleased to announce their annual Anniversary Celebration, Silent Auction, and Awards Night for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Innovation (2015) on January 28, 2016, at Café’ Unique, 607 Florida Avenue, Cocoa, FL. The awards and awardees are STEM Leadership Star of the Year: Mike Freeman; STEM Business Innovator of the Year: Harris Corporation; STEM Non-profit Innovator of the Year: National Space Club Florida Committee; STEM Educator of the Year: Mr. Charles Parker; and STEM Mentor of the Year: Mr. Nathan Pell.

The event will be hosted by SCWID and will recognize these individuals and organizations for their dedication and tireless support promoting STEM education in our community. “Workforce projections by the U.S. Department of Labor show that 15 of the 20 fastest growing occupations require significant science or mathematics training to successfully compete for a job,” said Joanne Longo, President of SCWID. She further states that “By lending a hand, these innovators are creating a conduit of education and support for our teachers, students, and parents necessary to overcome the projected deficit in future STEM-skilled workers.”

The annual Anniversary Celebration and Awards Night is open to the public.  People may register to attend this event at www.scwid.org.  Costs for WID members is $25 and $30 for non-WID members.  Light hors d'oeuvres will be served at this Cocktail Reception and will feature a Silent Auction to raise funds that benefit our STEM Scholarship program; featured auction items include passes to Disney and Sea World.  Additional donation items to be auctioned include items from Reed’s Jewelry, Oakley, Total Wine, restaurant certificates, and many others.

Established on January 21, 2013, SCWID is a non-profit professional networking and development organization for women and men across Florida’s Space Coast who contributes to national defense and security. The organization chartered the Space Coast STEM Education Council on October 14, 2013, and strives to connect STEM needs with STEM resources from our partners including local Industry, colleges and universities, civic leaders, parents, and students.
