Space Coast Pride will host a Community Vigil

Space Coast Pride will host a community vigil on Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. in memory of the victims killed in Orlando on June 12. The vigil will be held at Eau Gallie Square in the Eau Gallie Arts District in Melbourne. Everyone in the community who seeks peace and tolerance is invited to attend. The candlelight vigil will run from 7-10 p.m. There are large public parking lots in the area, one on Eau Gallie Boulevard by the shark mural, and one on Guava Avenue and St. Clair Street. Candles will be available, but please do not bring anything to be left in the park as debris.

This attack is, unfortunately, the worst mass shooting in American history, killing 20 more people than Virginia Tech in 2010. The gunman opened fire on a capacity crowd at Pulse Night Club leaving 50 people dead and over 50 injured.

Space Coast Pride is Brevard County’s LGBT community organization which facilitates greater understanding and tolerance and equal rights for all. June commemorates the gay community standing up to anti-LGBTQ violence at Stonewall Inn in New York City in 1969. That nightclub was recently recognized as a national monument and the first dedicated to the LGBT community. Gay pride events occur in June across the country and security has been stepped up nationwide in what is normally a time of family celebration. Space Coast Pride’s annual Parade and Festival will occur on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from noon-7 p.m.

We invite you to stand in solidarity with the Orlando victims and remember that if the gay community cannot feel safe, no community can feel safe.
