Cancer Treatment Options

Cancer is treated in different ways, depending on the type of cancer, the stage at which it is diagnosed, and the patient's overall health.  Your physician will likely recommend which treatment option is best suited for you and the side effects of that treatment.  It is always good, however, to educate yourself on the different types of treatments so you have a basic understanding of why your physician made the recommendation.  This is a very basic and incomplete description of each treatment and side effects.  Ask your physician if you have questions.

Chemotherapy: The use of one or more anti-cancer drugs that may reduce the growth and spread of cancer cells. Side effects may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, anemia, and infertility.

Radiotherapy: Radiation delivered internally or externally to inhibit the reproduction of cancer cells.  Side effects may include fatique, nausea, hair loss, and skin reactions.

Surgery: Surgically removing the cancerous tumor or other obstruction. Side effects may include pain, fatigue, appetite loss, swelling, and drainage from the site of surgery.

Hormone Therapy: The use of medications to control the body's production of hormones and control cancer growth. Side effects may include hot flashes, weakened bones, diarrhea, nausea, enlarged and tender breasts and fatigue.

Immunotherapy: Treatment that helps your body's immune system fight the cancer.  Side effects may include pain, flu-like symptoms, swelling, itchiness, and rash.

Hematology: For to patients with coagulation, clotting disorders, and other diseases related to blood and the generation of blood in the bone marrow.

Clinical Trials: Research studies that involve people who participate voluntarily. Each study tries to answer specific scientific questions and find better ways to prevent, diagnose, or treat cancer.
