Let's Meet for a Picnic Affair

A Picnic Affair

What happens when the pandemic cancels your dream two-week vacation to Europe and then both you and your husband are let go from your jobs? If you’re Ally Aboud, you quit looking for that next dream job and just create it.

And dream is the perfect word here, as Aboud creates pop-up picnicscapes for clients straight out of daydreams with her new business, A Picnic Affair.

Aboud and husband, Josh, had big plans for 2020. They’d saved up for over a year to experience that trip abroad. It was supposed to complete their to-do list before starting a family.

They understood when everything evaporated after travel was no longer safe due to the spread of COVID. But when they were both laid off by the same company in June, everything became uncertain. The 27-year-old from Melbourne was forced to introspect.

“As I was searching and applying for jobs, I couldn’t help but think about what my dream job would be since I’d be starting at a whole new place,” Aboud said. “I’ve always wanted to start my own business, to be my own boss and use my creativity.”

Josh Aboud found a new job within two weeks and was supportive of his wife’s vision, constructing her some picnic-perfect low tables. Ally Aboud curates the decor from mostly local retailers and offers a limited menu of snacks, fruit, cheese, desserts and charcuterie boards. In the fall, she also started offering pop-up movie night setups, complete with screen.

Guests select the location — it can be a park, the beach or a backyard or porch. She’s even set up indoor picnics.

“I get to use my creativity to create and design each theme, tablescape and menu item,” Ally Aboud said. “I’ve done so many special picnics from surprise birthday parties to baby showers. Sometimes people ask me to stick around to capture some pictures, and seeing the surprise in their loved ones’ eyes when they walk up to their picnic is amazing and so satisfying to me as a business owner.”

Aside from traditional milestones like birthdays and anniversaries, Aboud has helped friends toast at Friendsgiving on the beach and witnessed marriage proposals and pregnancy announcements.

“I don’t think this ever would have happened if not for the crazy year that 2020 ended up being,” she said. “From proposals to anniversaries to birthday parties, a pop-up picnic for you and your close friends and family is a great way to spend quality time together away from crowds and the craziness of the world.”

Picnic Affair was so much fun. They came on time, set up and came after we finished to clean up. Didn't even know they were there (we had it at our private residence due to rain). I will def be using their services again. Excited for the movie nights that they just started doing!
