Life’s Little Luxuries Return

As salons return to a new normal, clients clamor for the little luxuries we used to take for granted

Stylist and salon owner Nikki Blankenship was looking forward to celebrating the one-year anniversary of The Hair Engineers in May when the coronavirus pandemic changed everything. Today she is extremely grateful for the long hours and extra days at work because it means she is able to see her clients again.

The salon was able to reopen under new guidelines May 11. Blankenship, her team, and their guests must all wear masks. The stylists are no longer allowed to book multiple clients at the same time and must allow 15 or 20 minutes between guests to completely sanitize the chair.

“The new guidelines limit cash flow,” Blankenship said. “But we are thrilled to be able to open our doors and welcome our clients back … to give them the self-care they had been missing.”

Blankenship’s journey from mechanical engineering student to successful salon owner started back in 2002. After three years studying at Iowa State University, she realized engineering was not her passion and decided to pursue a career as a “hair engineer” instead. She left college and enrolled at the Professional Cosmetology Institute. She started her career as a hair stylist in Iowa, but moved to Florida in 2008 to escape the cold winters.

Blankenship worked as a stylist at the Imperial Salon and Spa for 10 years before deciding to branch out on her own. At first she rented a small, 350 square-foot space, but quickly realized she would need more. She bought her current location next to Cuizine restaurant in Satellite Beach, in May 2019. The Hair Engineers has grown to include other stylists with space to add even more.

The Hair Engineers has a loyal following and is known for cuts and color — particularly blondes — and also specializes in many different types of extensions. Every stylist at the salon brings their own unique style.

“We are a smaller boutique salon,” Blankenship said. “It’s a homey feeling when you walk inside our door. We treat everyone like family.”

Patrons come back time after time for the attention to detail, quality products, and the 5-minute scalp massage included with every service. Faithful client Victoria Martin credits Blankenship for working miracles with her hair.

“Nikki really listens to what your goal is,” Martin said. “And if it is not realistic, she will tell you. I always walk out of there feeling amazing. It is the best experience you can hope for.”
