Serene Harbor: 30 Years of Providing Safe Haven

It can be easy to forget that amid the Space Coast’s beautiful beaches and attractions, Brevardians from all socioeconomic classes struggle daily. Domestic violence does not discriminate, it affects men and women, and the damage to the family structure expands to other areas, such as career and school performance.

Serene Harbor was established in 1992 as a cooperative initiative by then-president of the Central and North Junior League and then-president of Junior League of South Brevard, who wanted to provide a safe harbor to the survivors of domestic violence in Brevard County.

For the past 30 years, Serene Harbor, a certified domestic violence center, has provided safe, confidential services through residential and outreach programs to over 35,000 individuals, their children, and their pets. The center provides over 5,500 nights of shelter to over 1,000 survivors and their families annually.

Serene Harbor has developed into one of the leading domestic violence organizations, not only in Brevard, but across Florida. Since 2019, our programs, services, and specialized staff have grown by more than 50%. In 2020-2021, our center provided counseling services, relocation assistance, employment, educational opportunities, nights of emergency shelter, and our Injunction for Protection program to survivors and their children and pets.

Serene Harbor considers all opportunities to integrate our mission into the community's everyday thinking through various programs, services, and partnerships. Our organization has a powerful connection to survivors searching for aid and supporters looking to help through social media. We believe that prevention is essential to our mission to help reduce the likelihood that anyone will become a victim or perpetrator of domestic violence by educating and bringing awareness to our community on what domestic violence and dating violence are and how they affect us all.

The area we serve, Brevard, is the 11th largest county in Florida, with a population increase of 14.37% since the 2010 U.S. Census. Our efforts to reach the community intensify to keep pace with the growth.

Prevention becomes the No. 1 tool in our arsenal of programs available to help the community understand the dangers of domestic violence. From the loss of members of our society due to violence to repeat offenders who bog down our legal system, we can’t let domestic violence ever become normalized.

Every person deserves respect, love, and understanding. Serene Harbor works tirelessly to reinstate these values with the survivors of domestic violence via counseling and a variety of programs designed to allow them to rediscover what makes them unique.

Each day, the committed staff and volunteers at Serene Harbor assist by answering our 24/7 crisis hotline, educating our community on topics related to domestic violence prevention, and spreading awareness of the needs survivors and their children experience as they transition to a life free of abuse.
