Women Share: The Glass House Provides Pathway Back

What more powerful way to learn about the impact of a program than to hear from those directly affected. My husband, Dr. Richard Adams, and I started The Glass House Recovery 17 years ago when we both were in recovery. We were educators and wanted to continue offering the kind of support we witnessed make a difference in people’s lives.

The Glass House has provided housing for an average of 200 women each of those 17 years across Brevard, Orange and Seminole counties. Some women stay a short time, some stay for years. Some return back to us.

They come from all walks of life, but most have struggled with long-term addiction and need accountability and support to go along with their treatment model. The Glass House community provides structure and accountability so that when the residents leave us, they have an easier path.

We are moved by the testimonials the women share with us each year, which demonstrate the power of support, love, structure and camaraderie. Here is what The Glass House means to them, in their own words.

“I need to live in a structured environment with rules. I find that it is easier for me to grow and learn more about myself when I am forming friendships with others. I can make mistakes safely. I enjoy learning to stay sober better when I have structure and camaraderie and fellowship.”

— Judy

“I can say with confidence that by making the one decision to move into a recovery house, my life was saved. By having the love of like-minded women around me, I have limitless potential.

— Kim

“Upon coming here, I was scared, lonely and had so many unknowns. But from the moment I walked through the doors, I was welcomed with hugs and smiles and a feeling of coming home… This home is safe and we are accountable for ourselves and others. Our positive journey has just begun.”

— Tammy

“I recently moved back to The Glass House after a number of years in recovery. I found myself in a very bad place and called Christi to ask, beg to come back. Structured living keeps me on track.”

— Denise

“I live at The Glass House. I have struggled to remain sober for the last 10 years and I always seem to do so much better when I am living with a structured environment. The camaraderie of other women with similar problems that I can relate to helps me learn and stay sober.”

— Sally

“The ladies at The Glass House have comforted me and just been there to listen while I faced some of my most difficult trials. Some women in my house have faced similar adversities and can share their experience, strength and hope with me. What I will take with me when I leave The Glass House cannot be summarized in an essay. But I can tell you that my reentry into society will be a successful one this time. And most importantly, my spirit is alive and well.”

— Sarah
