“Service Above Self” Learn to be a Go-Giver“Service Above Self” Learn to be a Go-Giver

“The wise man does not lay up his own treasures. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own.” — Lao Tzu

It is the season of giving, and hearts (and wallets) open wide and we are compelled to take care of our neighbors during the holidays.

Over the years, I’ve been involved in a variety of initiatives to try and share the magical experience of the holidays with as many children as possible in my community, most recently with Toys for Tots. I love to see that warehouse fill up with toys, and work with other volunteers to try to fulfill the wishes of several hundred children. And then to watch the cars line up on distribution day, and see grateful parents and grandparents get excited about watching their child’s face light up on Christmas morning because of all that has been donated.

I am so grateful to live in this exceptionally generous community. Countless organizations and individuals work tirelessly to meet the needs of those who are struggling. And although the holidays shine a light on that giving spirit, those initiatives are taking place year-round.

One of my favorite business books is “The Go Giver” by Bob Burg and John David Mann. It’s a short, easy read but it has a powerful message that shifting your thinking from getting to giving is not only a way to live a fulfilling life, but also to be productive and profitable in business.  (thegogiver.com)

My first challenge to you this season is to find new ways to be a Go-Giver. There are lots of opportunities to help, but be creative or look a little deeper at your own community and see where there is an unmet need. Perhaps a school in a lower-income area would be grateful if you volunteered some of your time or purchased something they could use. School supplies are always welcome, but maybe there is something else they need or want but can’t afford that is within your budget?

Or maybe select a senior citizen in your neighborhood or even several seniors at an assisted living facility. Imagine how a Christmas card would brighten their day… what if you organized a group, invested in some personal care and comfort items and delivered stockings to them?

And my second challenge is to think about giving all year long — and act upon it. Block out time on your calendar regularly to be a Go-Giver. Look for opportunities to lift someone else up, encourage them, and show appreciation. Be aware of the people around you and how you can positively impact their lives. It doesn’t have to always be a monetary contribution — your time, a smile, or a kind word or gesture can go a long way at home, in the office and in the community.

And try to not expect to be recognized or get anything in return. The rewards are there, but they might not be immediate. I am a passionate Rotarian because I believe in their motto: ”Service Above Self…He Profits Most Who Serves Best.” Happy Holidays!
