Team to Host Paranormal Investigation at Brevard Manor

Do you believe in ghosts?

If you’ve lived in Brevard County over a month, you’ve probably heard that Ashley’s Restaurant in Rockledge tops the list of local haunted places, but there are a few other relatively high profile spots, as well. The Henegar Center and Green Gables in Melbourne, and even The Compound in Palm Bay are thought to have residents of less-than-solid form. EverythingBrevard was invited to document the investigation of a potential addition to that list, Field Manor — Merritt Island’s historic 19th Century waterfront homestead, grove, and farm.

Korinn Braden, director of the property said, “Our goal is simply to identify those who still might call the manor home.”

While Braden said she’s never noticed anything out of the ordinary at the manor, an event coordinator did: “(She) was here late one night after a photo shoot and definitely heard a very purposeful walk across the floor. She told our foundation president, Jane Templeton, of the experience, and (Jane) said, ‘Oh, that was Ed.’”

Ed was a resident of the home who passed years ago. Jane determined it was Ed by the sound of his walking, but also knew it wasn’t Clyde, another historical resident who has a more leisurely gait.

Templeton learned in March about a group of paranormal investigators called Southern Paranormal Innovative Research and Investigation Team (S.P.I.R.I.T.) and gave their business card to Braden. But March was a hectic month for Braden, her first month as property director, and she misplaced the card. She found it three months later in June, about the same time S.P.I.R.I.T. was planning another Brevard engagement.

“I called Rena Thompson, S.P.I.R.I.T.’s case manager, that day,” Braden said. “Within an hour, we had a gameplan. I couldn’t believe my luck.”

S.P.I.R.I.T. is planning a two-night investigation at Field Manor in September. Each night, the group will host 10 people to participate and learn about the equipment and techniques used in a paranormal investigation. EverythingBrevard will be there. In July, EverythingBrevard met S.P.I.R.I.T.  paranormal investigators with various specialties.

  1. Laura Lynch, co-founder and empath. Empaths are highly sensitive, with a keen ability to sense what people and spirits are thinking and feeling.
  2. Darlene Morehouse, a retired police officer and empath with a talent for hearing, as well.
  3. Rena Thompson, case manager and co-founder of S.P.I.R.I.T. Rena is the “tech girl,” managing all electronic equipment and trigger objects — devices used to attract a presence to participate in a reading.

“We tell clients that we often get words and names on voice recorders or other devices. We're not saying the place is haunted, but if we can get a name you can take away from our investigation, maybe it will lead you down a new path of historical research," she said.
