28 North’s Executive Chef Earns National Honor

The Space Coast community can be thankful Kyle Hash turned away from his initial interest in engineering and decided to pursue his passion of being a chef. The executive chef at 28 North Gastropub in Viera is racking up awards and patrons with his culinary creations.

His latest recognition comes for use of fresh produce. Hash will be honored as one of the country’s nine most innovative chefs and foodservice professionals, by the United Fresh Produce Excellence in Foodservice Award Program during the PMA Foodservice Conference & Expo in Monterey, Calif. In July.

Hash claimed the top spot in the Fine Dining Restaurant category.

“As someone who generally gravitates towards proteins, it is gratifying to be recognized for my creative use of fresh produce, as well,” Hash said.

Having started as the chef at 28 North’s sister restaurant, Pizza Gallery & Grill, Hash has been the head chef at 28 North since its opening in February 2019. Both are at The Avenue Viera.

"You can’t have our gastropub without Chef Kyle,” said General Manager Mercy Gonzales. “His creativity is mind-blowing and the more the staff keeps buzzing about it, the more guests will keep flying in."

28 North touts its “local latitude and local attitude,” pub-style food, innovative craft cocktails and beer.

“My signature style is best described as elevated comfort food,” Hash said. “I love using locally sourced ingredients to create made-from-scratch cuisine that puts a modern twist on classic recipes from my childhood.”

United Fresh’s Produce Excellence in Foodservice Award Program was created to showcase chefs and their companies for their creativity, highlighting fresh produce in their menus and experimenting with new flavors — overall giving customers an innovative dining experience.

Hash solidified the win after reviews of how each nominee integrates fresh produce into their menu, their use of food safety protocols, and proper produce storage and handling. Nominees also were judged on their involvement and leadership in produce-related community service and special events, as well as recognition by their company and industry peers.

Previously, Hash won a 2019 Gordon Foods Show competition in Orlando that pitted several James Beard-nominated chefs against each other. He won over the voting audience with what he called “Pork Chop with Applesauce,” a dish of roasted pork loin, celery root puree, sage vinaigrette, peach mostarda, and a salad of bitter greens and pickled peaches.

In July 2019, Hash also attended the 2019 Markon/Mushroom Council Blended Burger Chef Summit Recipe Contest in Monterrey, Calif.

He graduated from Keiser Culinary School in Melbourne in 2009 before working for and assisting with opening several successful restaurants in Brevard.
