Hidden Gem: Keep It Local Wine Bar and Eatery

Throughout her decades-long career in the hospitality industry, Gail Lightle has worn many hats. So when COVID-19 threatened her event planning and catering business, she did what came naturally — she changed hats.

Lightle first moved into an historic Cocoa Village property, now home to Keep It Local Wine Bar and Eatery, intending to use it for event space. But when weddings, showers, and parties came to a halt in March 2020, she knew she’d have to think outside the box to keep her business afloat.

“Our business plan has completely changed,” laughed Lightle. “The pandemic changed everything.”

At first, Lightle started selling family-style meals from the home’s windows. She soon added bakery items — infusing sweetness into a difficult time. She was flexible, changing her business model as restrictions changed, and the business eventually grew into a wine bar.

Lightle started working with Dana Andersen, founder and owner of the International Wine Company. The two women, both working in a male-dominated industry, hit it off.

“I think what is most impressive about Gail is her ability to transition to just what the market needs,” Andersen said. “She’s a true chameleon. Transitioning to a wine bar was simply brilliant.”

In October of 2021, the yellow house became Keep it Local Wine Bar and Eatery, a chef-driven, pet friendly restaurant with both indoor and outdoor patio seating. The menu features lite bites and boards alongside an impressive wine selection. Menu highlights include the Greek platter board, seasonal charcuterie offerings, and an ever-changing dessert board.

Regulars return for the amazing food and warm atmosphere at the little yellow cottage built in 1920.

“It’s an historic house with a lot of character,” Lightle said. “When you walk in the door, it feels like you are coming home. It’s very welcoming.”

When not running the wine bar, Lightle is busy catering and planning events. Keep It Local is an ideal location for wedding, shower or birthday celebrations.

“Every event is very different, so you have to be flexible and fluid,” Lightle said. “My favorite part of the job is taking the customer’s vision and making it come to life. And I can also throw in some of my ideas and make it a little extra special for them.”

In addition to food and wine, Lightle has a passion for community involvement. An animal lover who lost her mother to cancer, she helps local animal groups and cancer charities. She has volunteered for Overlook Ministries, an organization that helps homeless, for over 10 years. She’s an active member of the Historic Cocoa Village neighborhood and a firm believer that what is good for one area business helps everyone succeed.

“Gail loves to support other small businesses, and that support is really important,” Andersen said. “She’s created a wine bar that is approachable and welcoming, never pretentious. She’s super welcoming and an all-around superwoman.”
