3 Creative Ideas To Connect With Your Kids

With summer fast approaching, it's a great opportunity for you to plan activities with the kids that will create memories to last a lifetime. Try at least one of these three summer fun tips to connect with your kids!

Tip #1: Stand Corrected

One of my favorite things to do with my son, Hiro, is ask him what he did that day at school. He gets really excited when he tells me about something he made. So I’ll create the scenario at home for him to teach me what he learned.

For example, we each were supposed to make a bunny out of Play-Doh. I let him show me how to make it and I purposely made a rock, which he thought was the funniest thing. I asked him if he could help me, and then his face lit up with so much joy that. He loved helping me and showed me how to make the parts of the bunny and then assemble it.

So maybe you can observe something your child can teach you, and you provide the scenario where they can show you and even correct you. Aside from giving them the feeling of being in control of the moment, it will foster a core memory for them that they got to teach and help you with something they love.

Tip #2: Wash the Car

Hiro loves to help me out with everything, but he especially loves to help me wash the car. Basically, rinsing the car off and being the “helper” is standard practice and tons of fun. If you have more than one hose, that’s even better, but buckets of water work just as good.

I love to wash the car when we get back from the beach because it allows me to wash off all the salt and sand from the car, but it also tops off a great time at the beach with an even greater time at home.

Tip #3:  Run Shopping Carts

I try to teach Hiro to help at least one friend every day. At school, he has so many opportunities to help his friends. But when summer comes, he will miss all his friends at school and all of those opportunities to help.

Instead, I introduced him to the “Shopping Cart Run.” We go to our local food store when it's least busy, and we run and collect shopping carts to bring back in. It helps the workers and Hiro loves riding the shopping carts we collect together. It's a fun way to connect with him while helping others.

I hope these three summer fun creative ideas to connect with your kids spark some fun ideas of your own. Our kids are growing fast, so enjoy every opportunity to connect with them while they’re still home.
