The Little Black Dress Embellished

What has many ways to change yet always stays classically the same? The little black dress (a.k.a. LBD) of course.

Fashion devotee Maggie Hickson takes us from her amazing closet to a day and night on the town, showing multiple ways to change up this all-important wardrobe staple. She and friend Vicki Martin demonstrate several ways to style party dresses for the holiday season and other outings.

Holiday Style: Add a Brooch

Vintage brooches add interesting details and allow you to create new styles.

Maggie added a bold jaguar to the ribbon belt on her short simple dress.

Vicki used a brooch to change the look of her long sequined dress by creating a slit by gathering the dress and pinning it.

TIP! You can find vintage brooches at resale shops, on Etsy and at estate sales. Ask your mom, aunt or grandmother to look in their jewelry boxes.

Girls Night/Date Night: Accessorize

Use different accessories and shoes to add life to your little black dress. Have one that’s been in your closet for years? Those are sometimes the most fun to transform into something that feels new.

Maggie is wearing a plain LBD she’s had for years. The necklace here makes a statement — borrowed from Vicki, it was salvaged from an old thrift dress. Maggie added knee-high boots for a fun look.

Vicki is wearing a versatile dress from Amazon. For a night out, the belt bag is perfect for carrying essentials while staying hands-free. Much easier to hold your cocktail or hit the dance floor.

TIP! If you have a piece of clothing with beading or interesting details but the garment has become tattered or unwearable, consider ways to reuse it to create something new.

Out and About: Comfort

Who says you can’t look good while running errands? Let us count the ways to dress down that LBD, too.

For a stylish daytime look, Maggie is wearing wedge tennis shoes and a fedora style hat. She is carrying a straw bag with this daytime look, perfect for the farmers market or art show.

TIP!  Think beyond “dress.” Convert your LBD to a comfortable tunic style by pairing with your favorite leggings.

Tag your LBD photos, we want to see your style!
