Illuminate Your Life Space

Illuminate Your Life Space

When I am designing a client’s home or a builder model, one of my favorite aspects is to select the lighting. There are literally thousands of incredible choices and unique designs out there!

Whether you envision a chandelier of layered sea glass, a modern metallic Sputnik style, woven shade pendants from Bali or a shimmering statement chandelier of draped crystals, there is something available for everyone’s design taste.

Every room, when designed, has a clear function and desired look. However, we also need to think about how you want that room to “feel” and how to set the mood. The temperature and type of bulb, style of fixture and placement can make a major difference.

The right lighting choice can transform a space like nothing else. When entering a new home that opens up to a great room, a fabulous large-scale light fixture is the perfect feature piece.  Bold, shimmering and warm illumination welcome you and your guests into your home.  Statement fixtures like this are found in some of the best showrooms from Ferguson Showrooms, Arhaus, Restoration Hardware and House of Lights, to name a few.

Some spaces are transitional, allowing the light and mood to shift upon demand. Smart home technology and dimming controls from companies like Legrand produce various scenes within the room at the touch of a button on your wall tablet or smartphone. Looking for an intimate dining atmosphere? The lights can dim to a romantic aura with a focus beam on the table centerpiece. Morning breakfast with the family calls for shifting to brighter lumens to awaken the senses.

There are so many variations of light bulbs now with different color temperatures, lumens, style of bulb and fashion statement. A renewed focus on modern farmhouse, industrial and mid-century modern interiors lends consumers to purchase the vintage Edison style bulbs.

Compact fluorescent bulbs bring daylight beams to compliment nature and promote healthy living. Studies involving Alzheimer’s and other healthcare facilities have shown that specific levels of lumens can offer healing properties for mental health. This data and research reveals the overall impact on wellbeing that lighting can have in both home and work environments.

Trying to find the perfect style fixture is the fun part, but it also can be challenging. Vendors offer such a wide range of styles, sizes, finishes and price points. Working with a trained interior designer or lighting specialist is worth the time to navigate the proper style, size, scale and price point to stay within budget and avoid a costly mistake. Touring lighting showrooms is exciting and I think of them as galleries of illumination to accentuate your home’s best features.
