Business Spotlight: Champion Home Health Care

“The healthcare industry isn’t easy. People can get really grouchy. We make a difference where we can by being willing to listen, and by treating everyone the way we’d like to be treated.”

— Amy Luhn, CEO and Administrator, Champion Home Health Care

When you’re sick or hurt and find yourself at the doctor’s office or hospital, the first person to tend to your care is a nurse. We think of the 3.6 million or so nursing professionals in the U.S. as those helping hands when we are feeling our worst. But nurses work in the home health care industry, too.

This May, as the national celebrates National Nurses Week, we recognize a company here in Brevard County, Champion Home Health Care, that connects nurses and home health professionals with patients in their most familiar surroundings.

For members of the “Care Team” at Champion Home Health Care, there is no such thing as a typical day at work. This group of home health aides assists in serving the various health and home needs of Brevard’s aging population. One day might include helping a dementia patient fold laundry and grocery shop, the next might involve post-surgery wound care.

“The job evolves from day to day,” said Amy Luhn, Champion CEO and administrator. “Our Care Team is mostly made up of independent contractors who set their own schedule. There are a lot of moving parts. It’s sort of like a dating service, in that each client/ caregiver relationship must be a good fit for everyone involved.”

Caregivers are often responsible for managing challenging situations, such as end-of-life care. As you might imagine, this can be taxing on morale. Helping the team stay in the right frame of mind is crucial. Team members are encouraged to take time off to recharge when necessary, and to talk about things when they get hard.

“We believe in treating people like we want to be treated,” Luhn said. “When things get tough, we often just need to talk about it. To be acknowledged is to be supported.”

Champion prides itself on going above and beyond to find the right fit for both clients and Care Team by aligning partnerships based on personality, needs, preferences and availability. Sometimes this means thinking outside the box to come up with creative solutions.

“We have one Care Team member who works with a woman with advancing dementia who loves to walk her dog,” said Luhn. “Her family is worried she’ll leave home and get lost, so our caregiver literally hides behind trees and follows her on these dog walks. This allows our client to feel independent, and continue doing something that brings her joy, safely.”

In a work environment that’s anything but ordinary, flexibility, kindness and a willingness to do whatever it takes is key to making it work.
