Giving is good for the soul

For 33 years now, I have been blessed to call Brevard County home. I remember when the courthouse was the only building standing in Viera, the Eau Gallie Causeway had a swing bridge and Pop’s Casbah in Downtown Melbourne was the place to go for breakfast. Best biscuits and gravy ever! And who remembers when Pizza Gallery was in the 1900 Building?

The growth of our community has been expansive over this 33-year timeframe. What I love most about the growth is that we have managed to hang on to our local charm and the feelings of warmth, coziness and togetherness…it’s magical! To support that local charm we all love and enjoy so much, we are encouraging you to Shop Small on Small Business Saturday. It's the annual holiday shopping tradition that gets communities everywhere out in support of their favorite small businesses. The Shop Small movement was launched in 2010 by American Express when small businesses across the country were hurting from an economy in recession. This year, Small Business Saturday falls on Nov, 24 and we want to hear about your shopping local experiences. We’d love for you to post your pictures on our Facebook page: Facebook.com/EverythingBrevard and on Instagram with hashtag #welivelocalwedolocal to celebrate your favorite local places to shop.

Looking for a fresh gift idea? Check out the Festive Flavors article on our site where we introduce you to some local food artisans who have delicious, unique and locally homemade treats (for people and pets!) waiting for you.

It’s the time of year when many small-business owners are looking for ways to give back. In this issue, Jennifer Sugarman, CEO of the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce, shares that Brevard County still ranks better than the national average when it comes to giving. Why is that, you might ask? Giving is good for the soul. It keeps us connected to the community, creates morale within our businesses, and most of all it helps people who are less fortunate and need that extra boost. We even have a day we nationally recognize called Giving Tuesday on Nov. 27.Let the festivities begin with the Turkey Trot, Thanksgiving dinner, Candlelight Shopping, Christmas, Hanukkah and boat parades, music and theatre performances and so much more.

As the year ends, I find myself reflecting on the work we have done. I am so proud of the team that puts this magazine together. And to our contributors and business partners, we couldn’t do this without your support and belief in our vision to create a healthy and prosperous community where families and businesses thrive. We are both honored and blessed to share your stories — the stories that enrich all our lives.

With gratitude and love,
Tracy
