6 Things You Didnt Know You Needed

When is the last time you inhaled finely ground salt? Had your skin painlessly resurfaced? Have you written down your goals or thoughts in a journal lately?

Techniques and products aimed to improve our quality of life are constantly evolving. And some stay the same. We had fun compiling some old and new things you may not have realized you needed.

A Stun Gun

Having situational awareness is the top self-defense tactic you can employ for your safety and that of your tribe. But having a device like a stun gun, can come in handy, too.

Some sobering statistics:

  • A violent crime occurs every 26 seconds.
  • 1 in 5 women are survivors of sexual assault.
  • A child is abducted every 40 seconds.

Florida is among 39 states that have no restrictions on carrying a stun gun, something that can help you get out of a situation or better yet, prevent it from ever happening. Damsel in Defense makes these readily available — and in varied colors — as a “pain compliance tool.” There’s even one disguised as a camera.

The electrical current is intended to stun a perpetrator enough to allow you to get away. The safety pin, which is attached to a loop for your wrist, disables the device should an attacker wrestle it away. Meaning it can’t be used back on you.

But, the hope is that activating the loud zapping noise will be enough to make a would-be assailant do a 180.

Dermaplaning

Looking for smoother skin? Dermaplaning is one of the newest facial techniques that exfoliates dead skin cells and removes unwanted peach fuzz. It also can be paired with another facial or chemical peel. In addition to being a deeper, non-abrasive exfoliation, peels can hydrate, lift hyperpigmentation and speed up cellular turnover.

“I like to create a cocktail of serums, an oxygen facial, or combine it with a brightening and lightening chemical peel for that ‘wow’ factor and for more dramatic and pleasing results,” said Jeanne Whitman, founder of Achieve Beautiful Skin. “Dermaplaning alone will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and supple.”

Other benefits include reducing fine lines and wrinkles, increased skin care product absorption and smoother makeup application. Hair will not grow back thicker or darker.

Whitman recommends dermaplaning every four weeks to remove dead skin cells and fine hair, but consult with your practitioner first. All skin types benefit from dermaplaning (including those with rosacea), with the exception of those with active acne. It also is safe for pregnant or nursing women.

Halotherapy

Halotherapy immerses you in the anti-inflammatory benefits of dry salt. It promotes a sense of rejuvenation, is non-invasive, and wow will your nasal passages be clear!

As you sit in “The Salt Box,” 99.99 percent pure sodium chloride is ground into micro particles and dispensed into the air. They penetrate deep into the lungs, and are also absorbed through the skin.

The salt prompts reduction of inflammation in the respiratory tract, providing relief to those with allergies, asthma and other ailments. The particles that fall onto the skin provide pH balance, which increases the skins rigidity and stimulates cell growth.

For general respiratory hygiene, halotherapy is recommended one to two times per week. Individuals will notice stress reduction, better sleep, and improved immunity.

Sessions last 20 minutes, and you can listen to music, read, or bring your cell phone, inside a plastic bag.

A Journal

Remember when writing things down was the only way to capture our thoughts? Today’s world allows us to share quick fleeting posts on social media and not necessarily dive deeper into all the creativity and emotion swirling inside us.

But the benefits of regular journaling are plentiful.

You might want to write in the morning, to declare your goals and intentions. Or evening writing can help you process what happened that day and allow for more restful sleep. Either way, journaling can help you process and plan. Living mindfully will allow you to better focus and feel happier. It also can be healing.

Cater your journal to your passions. You may want to keep a journal for food, travel or exercise. List makers may like a bullet journal. There’s even art journaling. ClayZ Arts hosts Art Journaling/Mixed Media socials, described as “learning, sharing, arting and making new friends.”

“There are no rules and you don’t have to be able to draw,” said ClayZ owner Laurie Knisley.

Whatever form journaling takes for you, just do it. Writing down goals means you are more likely to make them happen. So start communicating with yourself!

A Coach

Whenever you want to achieve something of significance, a coach can help every step of the way. It might be pushing through those last few reps at the gym. Or it could be a life-altering career change.

Step one is to gain clarity of exactly what you want to pursue. The next step is getting to the root of why you want to accomplish a particular goal, such as lose weight or start a business.

A coach can then help you determine specific outcomes or small steps as you work toward your ultimate goal. They can also provide resources you may need to help you get where you want to go.

“Another important role of a coach is to push you outside your comfort zone, because that is where growth and achievement happen most,” said Lisa Soloway, who coaches people in business and life. She recently was honored for her advocacy for teens and young adults aging out of foster care.

When you reach each monumental step toward what you desire, your coach will be by your side celebrating every win. So, why go it alone?
