One solution for Making Good on Those New Years Resolutions: Hypnotherapy

Every January, my phone starts ringing with clients who want to eat healthier, lose weight, be consistent with their workouts and stop procrastinating. What often gets overlooked, though, is the mental health aspect of what’s truly holding them back from achieving these goals.

They may have carried their emotional baggage from last year (and years prior) into the new year, and despite their bold attempts at a fresh start, their “baggage” is still running in the background.

Often the client will tell me they’re not motivated enough, they have a habit of procrastinating, or they’re not focused or disciplined enough. But as we dig a little deeper, we find that these are just symptoms of a deeper cause.

First, it’s worth mentioning that your subconscious mind (below your level of awareness) is running your life – it manipulates your thoughts and behavior. Its prime directive is to keep you safe and comfortable; it moves you away from pain and toward pleasure. The subconscious mind likes a repetitive routine and seeks to keep you within familiar territory (familiar routine, environment, eating patterns, etc.). When you step outside the familiar and things feel uncomfortable, the subconscious mind manipulates your thoughts and behavior to bring you back to what is safe, normal and familiar.

Beyond working to establish a new routine, clients also have an “inner critic” that reminds them they can’t reach their goals because they’re “not good enough,” “not worthy,” or “not deserving.” Or they experience procrastination, which may have roots in a fear of failure. Their lack of motivation may be due to emotional exhaustion, anxiety and/or depression. And that’s where hypnotherapy can help.

A well-trained hypnotherapist can reverse engineer the issue and bring it back to its original root cause – which is usually (although not always) in childhood. The inner child may not have had an opportunity to resolve trauma, neglect or unhealthy beliefs in the early years. But with hypnotherapy, we’re able to use techniques to assist that inner child and bring resolution and relief. And since adult behavior is based on the inner child’s emotions and beliefs, the hypnotherapy process can be life-changing.

So if you’re having difficulty with adopting healthier eating habits, starting a consistent workout routine, or finding yourself procrastinating when it comes to tackling those New Years’ resolutions, don’t beat yourself up. As a human being, you’re hardwired to stay safe and comfortable. New routines are developed over time, with patience and reasonable perseverance.

But if you’re unable to willpower your way through it, consider hypnotherapy for identifying and breaking down those deeper barriers, so you can clear a path to your goals in the new year!
