MIFF generates $11,407 for No Limits Academy
The Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival (MIFF), continuing its tradition of donating all of its proceeds to a nonprofit organization, gave a total of $11,407.50 this year to No Limits Academy. Premiere Theaters presented the final check of $5,957.50 to the academy’s Laura Joslin on Nov. 21 to support buying educational aids for its students. The school helps physically disabled children ages 6 to 21. Premiere’s check supplements the $5,450 already raised from donations and advertising sales.
The 19th annual Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival was held October 19-21 at Premiere Theaters Oaks 10 in Melbourne. Sixty independently produced movies were shown, including many shorts produced in Florida. Several came from other states and countries.
No Limits Academy provides an individually tailored, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and education of children with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries and other physical disorders. Using the latest innovative, validated and medically based therapies and advanced technologies in the classroom setting, the No Limits Academy team approach yields greater independence physically and academically. A No Limits education translates into measurable improvement in the student’s daily life and future.
Dr. Terry Cronin Jr. along with Three Boys Productions organized the first MIFF in 1999 at the Henegar Center in Melbourne. It consisted of a single screening of a handful of locally produced films. This year’s MIFF, chaired by Dr. Cronin, was a two and a half day event held at Premiere Theaters Oaks 10 that attracted submissions from around the world. In 2018, MIFF plans to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
As a result of the strong support received from the late Rob Kurrus Jr. of Premiere Theaters, the MIFF was one of the first film festivals in the world to use the latest digital cinema technology to present all of its films back in 2006. Now at the MIFF, filmmakers and festival guests can see all productions on the big screen using the same projection and sound system used for major theatrical films. The MIFF is supported by many volunteers and is technically produced and coordinated by A Cut Above Video Productions, Inc.
