Run 20K in 2020: Four local races benefit children and families in Brevard

January is the time for making resolutions -- and four local races are making it easy to stay accountable.

The Run For the Kids Race Challenge asks participants to run or walk 20K in 2020 to raise funds and awareness for four local organizations that benefit children and families. The race challenge is open to all ages and those who complete it earn a finisher medal with four different race decals.

In its second year, the challenge features four of Brevard’s most well-established 5K races.

“Last year was our inaugural challenge and we learned how much more awareness we can raise for these important causes by banding together,” said David Scholl, the challenge director.

The challenge kicks off on Jan. 25 with the Tooth Trot 5K at Wickham Park. The Tooth Trot raises funds for free dental services and dental education for Brevard children.

The second race in the challenge is the Brevard PALS 5K for autism awareness on Feb. 15 on the Florida Tech campus. Proceeds from the race support summer camp for children on the autism spectrum and other resources for local families.

The third race of the challenge is the Brianna Marie 5K that benefits fetal therapies, or surgeries that can be performed on babies before they are born, that takes place on March 7 at Wickham Park.

The final race in the challenge is the Downtown Melbourne 5K that benefits foster children through The Haven for Children. That race happens on March 21 through the streets of downtown Melbourne.

“Earning the last piece of that finisher medal is always a great feeling, for adults and kids alike -- runners and walkers,” Scholl said. “And when you know you’ve helped four important causes, it’s even better.”
