Bring the whole family out to the Health First Fight Child Hunger 5K Run/Walk event. This fun morning serves to help raise awareness of the efforts to fight childhood hunger by The Children’s Hunger Project and the Sharing Center of Central Brevard.
Date: January 12, 2019
Time: Starting: 08:00 AM
Admission: $15-$30
Location: Viera High School
Address: 6103 Stadium Parkway Melbourne, FL 32940
The purpose of this race is to raise awareness and funds to end child hunger in Brevard County. The two organizations that share the proceeds of the event, help children who are going hungry right here in the county. Keith Gee is the executive director of The Children’s Hunger Project; David Brubaker is the president and director of the Sharing Center of Central Brevard. The race, which is in its third year, has for its primary sponsor Brevard’s biggest health care provider, Health First, and for its honorary co-chairpersons, FLORIDA TODAY Executive Editor Bob Gabordi and his daughter Jessica.
Bob Gabordi emphasized, “We want to make this the biggest event in Brevard to fight child hunger,” Bob Gabordi said. “Each year, thousands of children who qualify for free or reduced-fee meal programs in Brevard’s public schools do not receive the nutrition they need on Saturday and Sunday. We’d like every child in need to have healthy and sustainable meals over the weekend so that they arrive at school ready to learn and grow!”
Race highlights
- All participants will receive a pancake breakfast after the race.
- The winners in various categories receive a retro metal lunch box, in lieu of traditional medals. “They actually have a practical use,” Gee said.
- Awards ceremony immediately follows race

Every Friday since 2010, The Children's Hunger Project has been consistently delivering weekend food packages to help as many elementary school children as possible to carry kid-friendly food home in their backpack. Currently, serving over 2,000 students each weekend in 46 elementary schools, the need is more than 3,000 and growing.
The Central Brevard Sharing Center provides emergency assistance to those in our community who are struggling to obtain life’s most basic needs, since 1978.
