Yoga Outside the Lines: The Art of Flowing

Yo The Yoga Garden
Date: Saturday March 23, 2019
Time: 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Location: The Yoga Garden
Address: 1482 Pineapple Ave., Melbourne, FL, 32935
Category: Educational
Our yoga practice is a place where we can move, expand and express ourselves. Within the confines of our yoga mat, we are free to explore our edges, both physically and within our minds, to grow into the possibility of our potential. What if we could take this freedom we find in our practice beyond those borders and explore this potential in a new context? This workshop is an exploration of that possibility. Yoga and Drawing allow you to slip into this zone of simultaneous concentration and relaxation. They are both active meditation and a contemplation practices. When explored in tandem, yoga and drawing will take you to new realms. This is called flow—a mental state where you're full immersed in the present moment.

This workshop will begin a 1 hour illustration class for both beginners to experienced artists. During this guided drawing session, participants will draw yogis/models in different yoga poses for everyone to sketch sing charcoal. We will learn tips and techniques on gestural drawing, which will make the drawing process more comfortable for those who have less experience.

Gestural drawing is a loose form of sketching that attempts to capture your subject's basic form and express movement. It is rather freeing, as it allows the artist to be less attached to the outcome, and more playful as they sketch. Typical situations involve an artist sketching a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes. It is a form of expression that is neither abstract nor realistic. It is, quite simply, a quick sketch in which your hand follows your eyes and is designed to be experimental and enjoyable.
We will be moving around the illustration circle helping each person individually with proportion, scale and tone. You will leave the class with several finished illustrations to take home with you.

The second half of the workshop, you will be lead you through a yoga practice where poses are held a minimum of 5 to 10 breath. Throughout practice, you can choose to participate and do the poses on your mat, or sit on your mat and sketch the other participants. All participants will have the option to switch roles, from practicing yoga to continuing to draw, as they wish throughout the practice.

This class is suitable for beginners as well as expert artists.

Time: 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Location: Studios of Cocoa Beach
Address: 165 Minuteman Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach
Category: Arts / Exhibits
The Studios of Cocoa Beach announces the featured artist for the month of March, Lisa Shepperd.

Lisa has been making pots since high school classes in Miami. She continued to study and create while pursuing degrees in French and Environmental Studies, before returning to Florida to raise a family. For several decades, she worked locally with a gas-soda kiln at Horse Creek Pottery, but is now altering her decoration techniques for electric firings. She continues to take every opportunity to study with talented potters near and far, including Mackenzie Smith, Jinsong Kim, Josh DeWeese, Lorna Meaden and Linda Arbuckle.

Lisa says, “My work begins on the wheel, but I often alter the form with handbuilt additions. I create distinctive decorations by painting with clay slips, as well as carving into the surface. I want to make functional art that people can use every day; all my pottery is food safe, and may be put in the dishwasher and microwave.”

Her favorite pots tell a story with graphic or narrative designs reflecting her interest in Florida’s natural environment. Her goal is to make everyday objects that are useful, attractive and fun!

One of Lisa’s “ Berry Bowls ” will be the prize in the Studios’ monthly giveaway. To enter this free drawing, visit the Studios any day in March
