Blood Runner Runs Testing to You

Going to the lab for bloodwork is never high on the fun-o-meter. The activity usually eats up a significant part of the day, with the driving and waiting — often for a while — in crowded lobbies. Wouldn’t it be nice if the lab could come to you?

Actually, it can, thanks to Leanne DeCosimo, founder of Blood Runner mobile phlebotomy service.

“We go to patients’ homes and workplaces to draw blood and we deliver it to their preferred lab, and the results are sent directly to your requesting physician,” said DeCosimo, who modeled her business after a similar service she provided in Long Island.

Lillian Mannino quickly fell in love with Blood Runner’s service. The Rockledge resident, who suffers from serious back problems, has trouble getting to the neighborhood drug store, much less the lab. Several medical issues require frequent bloodwork from multiple attending physicians, so Mannino grew to dread lab visits.

“There are always so many people waiting there, and with COVID, it’s even worse,” Mannino said.

These days, Mannino presents multiple bloodwork orders to Blood Runner and her blood is drawn in one visit at no extra cost. She can even wear bunny slippers.

DeCosimo and her staff travel as far south as Vero Beach and as far north as Mims to help patients with the range of blood draws. Results are accessible online for:

  • Complete blood counts
  • Comprehensive metabolic panels
  • Basic metabolic panels
  • Prothrombin time INR
  • Blood enzyme tests coagulation panels
  • Lipoprotein panels
  • Hemoglobin draws
  • Thyroid panels,
  • Vitamin D
  • A1C

Although the service is not covered by insurance, the flat $25 fee for one patient or $35 for two people in a household covers the convenience and time saved. The service is perfect for senior citizens who no longer drive; moms who would have to ferry young children to the lab; individuals with demanding work schedules and anyone else who wants to skip the hassle of a lab visit, particularly during a pandemic.

The appointment-only service caters to the needs of the individual patient. If 6 a.m. is a good time for the client, that works for Blood Runner. If blood draws are needed daily, monthly or weekly, Blood Runner phlebotomists will be there.

“We do whatever it takes,” DeCosimo said.

Because most labs close by 4 p.m., blood draws should be completed no later than 3 p.m. so Blood Runner can get the bloodwork to the lab same day. Deliveries are made to major labs such as Health First, Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics, as well as to smaller labs.

DeCosimo plans to expand Blood Runner into the Orlando area, where she’ll surely service many grateful patients like Lillian Mannino.

“I don’t know what I would do without them,” she said.
