Company: ASM Global – Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts

Title: Vice President and General Manager

Years at The King Center: 1.5

Years in the industry: 36, 32 with ASM Global and its predecessor, SMG

Why did you choose this career path?

I was in college on a music scholarship and realized my future did not involve performing. I wanted to pursue something that combined business and the entertainment industry.

Why were you drawn to The King Center and what have you learned since being there?

When ASM Global was evaluating the opportunity at the King Center, we saw tremendous opportunity in growing the audience base and diversifying the programming at the King Center. I wanted to lead the team that was going to achieve that goal. The King Center has a tremendous history and legacy, and is very well regarded within the entertainment industry. But not everyone in Brevard County knows what a great venue we have right in our own backyard! We have begun a multi-year renovation of the Center, with new bars, lobby enhancements and a completely renovated Crown Club. And that is just the beginning. We are excited about the future of the King Center and look forward to what is to come in the months and years ahead.

How would you describe your approach to managing?

Hire the smartest people you can find, let them do their job, support them and stay out of the way.

What do you love about your work?

Every day is different. Some days it’s hosting ZZ Top, the next day might be a Broadway show, the next might be welcoming 4,000 grade schoolers to see our wonderful Brevard Symphony Orchestra. That does not get old.

What’s some great advice you have received?

My first boss in the business, when something went wrong would ask, “Did you check it yourself?”  Invariably, the answer to that question was, “No.” Learning to check the details has made all the difference in my career.

Any vision for the future of The King Center you'd like to share?

We want the King Center to be your go-to place to enjoy the best in arts and entertainment while providing a patron experience that is second to none. As previously mentioned, we are in the midst of renovations to include new and renovated restrooms, an expanded patio and the enhanced ability to host meetings, conferences and consumer shows at the Center.

Outside of work, what are some of your favorite things to do?

My wife and I enjoy travel, spending time with family, reconnecting with friends, and enjoying the region by finding the cool, non-touristy places all around the area.
