Executive Business Showcase: Clevens Face & Body Specialists

Phillip Barbee, M.D.

Title: Facial Plastic Surgeon

Started in industry: More than 10 years of surgical training and experience

Area of expertise: Facial cosmetic surgery procedures including facelift, eyelid surgery, and rhinoplasty, as well as complete skin cancer care and non-invasive facial rejuvenation

Why did you choose this career path?

I was fortunate to have very broad training in all aspects of head and neck surgery from cancer to trauma to cosmetics. Instead of trying to do it all, I wanted to focus on the surgeries that I enjoyed most: facial plastic surgery and skin cancer. It’s incredibly satisfying to work with patients on achieving their cosmetic goals and the vision they have for themselves. The diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer is an important aspect of my practice as it affects so many people here in Florida.

Why were you drawn to Clevens Face and Body Specialists, and what have you learned since being there?

I was drawn to Clevens Face and Body Specialists because the practice truly is a group of specialists focused on very different and specific areas. Each provider in the practice has their own area of expertise. This is great for the providers because everyone is doing the things they love most and more importantly, it gives our patients the best possible outcomes.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

I would say the biggest part of my approach to patient care is always to keep the patient in the center of everything I do. Each person is unique and requires a treatment plan tailored to their individual situation.

Outside of work, what are some of your favorite things to do?

When I’m not in the OR, I really enjoy spending time with my fiancé, Monica, and our goldendoodle, Miles Davis. I also enjoy traveling, music, and surfing.

What do you love about your work?

I love coming in each day and knowing that I am part of a group of people who all share the same common goal. It is truly incredible to work with a team so dedicated to what they do!

What’s some great advice you have received?

Some great advice I received early in my training was to treat every patient as if they were one of my own family members. If I’m ever faced with a tough decision, I ask myself what I would do if it were my own mother or sister. It’s something that has always stuck with me.

Title: Plastic Surgeon

Started in industry: More than 10 years of surgical training and experience

Area of expertise: Plastic surgery of the breast and body, including breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, and tummy tuck

Why did you choose this career path?

I have always loved that plastic surgery is full of problem solving, and I’ve always enjoyed having the ability to find the best solution.

Why were you drawn to Clevens Face and Body Specialists, and what have you learned since being there?

Clevens Face and Body Specialists has a very uplifting atmosphere and work environment. In this day and age, it’s a unique environment where you find people who actually love what they do, so I feel right at home.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

I have learned since day one of both general surgery and plastic surgery, you always have to listen to what your patients tell you. Many times the answer to a diagnosis or the best treatment comes from the patient. You have to put the pieces of the puzzle together to make the best plan.

Outside of work, what are some of your favorite things to do?

I love spending time with my wife and two children. As a family, we love exploring all the nooks and crannies of our local area. When we get time, we travel and spend a lot of time outside. I also enjoy running, exercising, and playing classical piano.

What do you love about your work?

I love being able to practice surgery and yet be creative in a detailed oriented approach.

What’s some great advice you have received?

Always stay humble in both your career and life.
