In 2014, Kaila's mother, Ginger Taylor, began pursuing a side career as a professional birth doula. An aspiration of Ginger's was for her and her daughter to eventually work together, and in 2017 that dream came true when Kaila filmed and photographed the first birth she ever attended. 

Her passion for documenting life through photography kept growing. Shortly after, she expanded her horizons by pursuing maternity, newborn, and portrait photography. Kaila has documented the birth of over 20 babies. 

How it works:

When hired for a birth, Kaila does a phone or in-person consultation. She discusses at which hospital the mother is birthing, any questions the clients have, and what they desire to see when they review their finished album and video. Some clients have special moments of the birth that they wish to have documented. 

When it’s delivery time, Kaila begins capturing moments such as the nurses monitoring the heart rate, the mother's reactions, laboring, the birth, cutting of the cord, and the newborn's first hour of life. 

“Never in a million years would I have thought that this is what I would be doing with my teen years,” Kaila said. “Connecting with people through the lens of a camera is such an amazing thing. Being at these births is not just me taking pictures, it's me documenting an incredibly intimate time in someone's life. I am blessed to carry such a role, because these are the pictures that are going to be seen for generations to come.”

To support her clients to the best of her ability, Kaila became a DONA Certified Birth Doula at age 14. She received professional training on labor, breastfeeding, newborn, and postpartum care. When she is not photographing, Kaila is working to earn her associates in arts and general education degrees. In her free time, she enjoys thrift shopping, trying new coffee shops, going on photo shoots with her friends and traveling.
