Celebrate National Museum Month on the Space Coast

There’s no better way to spend National Museum Month than in your own backyard. With 25 museums, organized and run by the MOB (Museums of Brevard), expertly curated collections of rich history and natural sciences on the Space Coast are only a short drive away.

You’ve heard of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral, Brevard Zoo, and the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science in Cocoa, but there are many more unexpected and educational experiences to add to your summer activity list.

In Northern Brevard, you’ll find the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Center, which celebrates and memorializes these important Civil Rights activists. You can visit Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum to see warbirds from pre-World War I to the Modern Era and artifacts of military history. Learn the history of law enforcement and pay respects to fallen officers at the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum

The American Space Museum and Space Walk of Fame allows you to get up close and hands-on with space history from a collection curated by former astronauts and space workers. A short walk away, you’ll find the North Brevard Historical Society Museum filled with artifacts from Titusville and surrounding areas. The Sands Space & Missile History Center is a free experience that blends space and military history just outside of the Space Force Base.

Climb to the half-way point in the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse and view the Space Coast from one of the only operational lighthouses in Florida. Explore the Air Force Space & Missile Museum including the blockhouse that launched Alan Shepard into space. The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse and Air Force Space & Missile Museum are exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours only available as an upgrade to a Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour or through specialty tour providers. Visit their websites for more info.

In Central Brevard, make an appointment to visit the Florida Historical Society and Library of Florida History for thousands of photographs, maps, newspapers, and books dating back to the early colonial period. Head to Ron Jon Surf Shop for the Florida Surf Museum, and check out the Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures while in Cocoa Beach. Be sure to visit the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center and Museum for classic vehicles and military memorabilia.

Across the county, you’ll also find a host of historic homes that were among the first built on the Space Coast. These include John H Sams Homestead, The Historic Rossetter House Museum & Gardens, The Historic Pritchard House, Green Gables, Grant Historical House, and Field Manor

Don’t miss information centers at important county parks, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Barrier Island Sanctuary, Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, and Canaveral National Seashore
