No Ordinary Food Truck Experience

With both menu and mission, No Ordinary Burritos lives up to its name.

Lots of food trucks serve burritos, but none quite like Scott Stella’s. The name No Ordinary Burritos refers to the variety of unconventional “burgerritos” on the menu. But Stella’s truck is unique in its core mission, as well. His truck also serves as a training ground for two young adults with disabilities.

Stella’s 22-year-old son, Ben, who has cerebral palsy and autism, works as cashier. Ben’s best friend, Michael Campbell, who has a traumatic brain injury, cooks as a “burritorista-in-training.” These jobs give both young men the opportunity to practice socialization and essential life skills in a reasonably controlled environment.

Stella perfected his burritos in his home kitchen, making them for friends and family and eventually selling them. He invented his signature burgerrito after opening the refrigerator and seeing leftover grilled burgers, but no buns. He continues to create new recipes.

Stella had dreamed of owning a food truck for years when, in January of 2020, an anonymous donor helped make his dream a reality.

“From that first dream, a new dream has evolved,” Stella said, “which is giving young adults with developmental disorders or traumatic brain injuries the avenue to get into the workforce.”

BenStella is a well-rounded young man. He is a UCF graduate looking for a job as a web developer, and he’s a gold medal powerlifter in the state Special Olympics.

“Ben, because of his Asperger’s, is generally not a fan of people,” Stella said. “But this has helped him grow, and now if someone asks him just the right question, you can’t stop him from talking.”

Ben loves spicy food and to talk to customers about hot sauce. His favorite menu item is the popular firebomb burgerrito — a burger topped with scorpion pepper cheese, ghost pepper sauce and jalapenos.

“My favorite thing about working on the truck is being outside and enjoying the sun and enjoying the conversations with people,” Ben said.

No Ordinary Burritos has built a loyal following of customers who eagerly look to see where the truck will be each week. Customer Jason Edwards makes it a point to get to the truck a few times each month.

“I love the food and the atmosphere,” Edwards said. “Scott treats everyone like family. Ben is a great kid and he knows the menu forward and backward. My favorites are the Knucklehead, the Jamaican jerk tacos, and the Firebomb.”

As the business continues to grow, Stella is committed to making a difference to as many young people as he can.

“My goal in the future would be to continue to hire people with developmental disorders or traumatic brain injuries,” he said. “A lot of those guys love people and love being out there and this is a great experience for them.”
