Auto Tech Graduates in High Demand

The only post-secondary automotive service technology program in Brevard County makes it convenient and affordable for anyone to transition to a fulfilling career in the automotive industry.

Brevard Public Schools’ mission to serve every student with excellence as the standard extends well beyond the walls of the county’s elementary, middle, and high schools. The Adult and Community Education department provides residents access to high-quality, affordable programs designed to meet the varied needs of our community.

One of the adult education office’s newer post-secondary offerings is the automotive services technology program.

“There is no other post-secondary program like this in Brevard County,” said Tonya Holder, learning specialist for Brevard County Schools Adult and Community Education department. “And it’s offered at a very competitive cost.”

The program is led by instructors Randy Pitts and Chris Wilson, two master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified technicians with over 80 years experience between them. Students receive hands-on instruction and work on cars of a variety of makes and models.

“Our program is small,” Holder said. “We are able to provide more one-on-one instruction. One of our highly experienced teachers ran an automotive repair service business in the community.”

Students taking the course learn to diagnose malfunctions, adjust or replace parts of the automobile, and restore the car to the specifications recommended by the manufacturer. From basic maintenance to the latest in technology, this program lays the groundwork for a career in the automotive mechanics field.

As they work through the course, students have the opportunity to take the ASE exams, working toward full certification as a brake system technician, suspension and steering technician, electrical systems technician, and engine repair technician.

Pitts said most of their students are looking for a better career opportunity and their graduates are in high demand, often landing a job in the industry immediately.

“We work with local dealers and private repair shops,” Pitts said. “They are always calling looking for our students. There is a gap of people coming into the industry and not enough good students to put out into the workforce.”

Enrollment is open for fall, with courses running from August through December, from 4:30-9 p.m. at Satellite High School. The program is open to all students over the age of 16. A high school diploma or GED is not required.

“The future is bright for anyone who likes to work with their hands,” Pitts said. “They just need to be willing to work hard and stay up on new car technology.”
