From the Instagram account of Carleton Varney, aka Mr. Color, who passed away in July 2022 at age 85.

Carleton Varney was known as Mr. Color, the man who made colorful clothing popular among gentlemen. In true Palm Beach style, he brought fashion to life with style and a palette of vibrant color to encapsulate the Florida lifestyle. He has inspired many with his love of color, going on to influence fashion and other designers to use color every day.

Are you ready to go bold with color in your wardrobe?

Varney was best known for his decorator style, notably highlighted at The Grand Hotel in Michigan and the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, where he worked alongside one of the most celebrated color-loving decorators of all time — Dorothy Draper. He served as design consultant to the White House during the Carter administration and has written 35 books on decorating.

Varney transferred his love of vibrant color from interiors to his fascinating wardrobe. He was always seen sharply dressed and inspiring men and women alike to get out and live and dress in vivid color.

Some popular designers who have become known for using vibrant color for everyday fashion include Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren and Lilly Pulitzer.

If you are looking to expand your wardrobe, the men’s sections of Dillards stores in Melbourne and on Merritt Island offer variety and excellent service.

Gentlemen not yet ready to go all-out with color can consider a belt or pocket square as a pop of color.

This quote from Carleton is so perfectly stated about trends and I believe it should be applied to personal style, as well:

“As I have always said, fashion trends come and go. But here is my decorating advice: Only embrace trends that you and your family really love. Surround yourself with the things that make you happy — that is the best trend to follow.”

Let’s hear what some Brevard County gentlemen have to say about wearing color:

“Fortune favors the bold, so be daring. Just make sure to read the room before picking your outfit. Dress like it matters to someone else. It does.”

Bobby Pickwood

“When I was 3 years old, I had a little bright red blazer. I'm sure that's where my relationship with color and style started. As a jazz musician, it's always important to dress for the stage and in my travels across the world, I appreciate how different cultures incorporate color in their wardrobes and lives.”

Dr. Ted Weber and his wife, Carla, enjoy fashion inspired by Carla’s love for living in color and a love for Lilly Pulitzer design.
