(Translation: Simple Elegance in Nature’s Glory)

As the year wraps up, we are immersed in holiday festivities and enjoying all that the season represents: Cozy surroundings, quiet walks in nature’s glory, great conversation with family and friends in the warm glow of a fireplace. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to carry that throughout the entire year?

Looking ahead to 2024, the significance of these emotions, surroundings and comforts carries through into a new perspective of home. A true familiar haven. One of the biggest design elements that I incorporate into my interiors is to invite nature inside. Welcoming calming colors that are good for the soul, hand crafted textures, artisan textiles and sculpted patterns with movement. A cohesive palette and aesthetic that flows freely through the home.

Biophilic design — creating a cohesive environment with a blend of nature tones, organic patterns and artwork, natural and woven textures and lighting to reflect sunlight — is ever prominent now. A prominently placed live wall, filled with multitone organics, is the perfect element to greet guests and pay homage to nature.  It embodies respect and responsibility to nature and sustainability. There is finally a shift to an eco-conscious lifestyle. Mother Earth is beaming with pride!

Clients are longing for a fusion of sophistication and casual. While luxury and high style are still the drivers in great interior design, the same grand vision can be achieved with more simplistic aesthetics. Sharp multi-tone colors, unique textures and patterns, and comfortable gathering spaces is where the home is at.

Unique characteristics such as custom wood wall designs, sculpted wallpapers, a stunning feature light fixture or bold color art, along with perfectly placed sentimental decor pieces complete the look. Approachable, cool and collected interiors.

Now more than ever, our homes should be a place of comfort, a sanctuary where we can truly be ourselves, unwind, and create special memories with those most dear.

I think the Danish have it perfectly stated with their term Hygge (pronounced “hooga”). In essence, Hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.

Let the new year surround us all in a cozy blanket of Hygge.

10 principles of the Hygge Manifesto

  • Atmosphere
  • Presence
  • Pleasure
  • Equality
  • Gratitude
  • Harmony
  • Comfort
  • Truce
  • Togetherness
  • Shelter
