Business always in bloom in Brevard

Business always in bloom in Brevard

Tracy Stroderd

Flowers are blooming, gardens are growing, closets are being cleaned out, and home beautification projects are getting started. The days are longer, the temperatures are warmer, and the beaches and parks are filled. Events galore: The Chocolate Festival, craft fairs, farmers markets, air shows, surfing and wellness events, 5K runs, food and wine festivals, fundraisers and street parties. Something for everyone. Spring is my favorite time of year on the Space Coast.

One thing always blooming here is entrepreneurship. As you know, entrepreneurs come in all different shapes, sizes and ages and can come from anywhere. They each have different skills, dreams, passions and visions and represent many different industries. I often find myself wondering…how did they come up with that idea?

It makes me think of being a kid and having a lemonade stand, babysitting, delivering newspapers or selling products for school fundraisers — my mission back then was simply to make money so I could have the things I wanted. Little did I know the development of those skill sets back then would lead me to owning my own business.

As an entrepreneur, mentor and educator, I often share with students and new business owners what I think it takes to be a successful business owner. Here are a few of the things that I believe are a must:

  • Love what you do so it doesn’t feel like work, and when you want to quit because it’s hard, you won’t because you love it.
  • Tenacity and determination are essential. It’s going to be harder than you think balancing work and life.
  • Know your numbers and never run out of cash, it usually will require more than you have.
  • Build strong relationships as these are priceless and can take you to the next level. When you need a friend, you will have many to choose from.
  • Build a team of like-minded individuals who believe in your vision and have a strong work ethic.
  • And always give back.

Young entrepreneurs inspire me with their enthusiasm and creativity. They are fearless!

I am excited to introduce a new column to the magazine – The Lemonade Stand. This is a column where we will feature a young entrepreneur in our community. It makes my heart smile to see these young children embracing a dream at such a young age. The creativity, ingenuity and determination are inspiring.
