BK Adventure Connects Tens of Thousands to Brilliant Brevard Bioluminescence

Sandra Krasa trekked to Nepal to film a documentary, and returned with a new husband and a cool adventure company.

While in Nepal, she fell for the intrepid charms of adrenaline enthusiast Ram BK (yes, that is his real surname, to the chagrin of TSA agents). Ram ran an extreme adventure company that earned kudos from Lonely Planet.

“They were such extreme sports that you would not be able to do in the U.S. because of the liability,” Sandra said.

In Sandra and Ram’s case, opposites attract.

“He’s fearless and I’m bookish,” she said.

To compensate for the differences in personalities, the couple started a second endeavor more akin to Sandra’s personality in the form of a medical tour company for doctors and nurses.

Everything was fine until Nepal closed because of COVID. The BKs then turned their attention to Sandra’s home state of Florida, where they found an untapped market in the bioluminescence tour industry. BK Adventure made lemonade out of a huge lemon and is now the largest bioluminescence tour company in the world, with 25,000 guests a year.

One of Mother Nature’s most amazing shows, bioluminescence is an unforgettable sight for guests.

“Words can’t describe how incredible this experience is,” said Alex Jar, who took a see-through kayak bio tour this Fourth of July. “Once you are on the water, it is truly magic. The clear kayak would completely light up underneath you as you would go through the water.”

In Brevard County, the creatures behind bioluminescence are dinoflagellates, plankton that glow an other-worldly blue or green when a kayak paddle or a hand disturbs the water. Glowing comb jellies — jelly-like sea creatures that glow in the water — also light up the night.

“Getting through a school of them is magnificent,” Sandra said.

2022 has been a banner year for bioluminescence, thanks to hot weather early in the season.

“Getting into the upper 90s in June really helped,” Sandra said.

Tours run throughout the year, but peak season is late summer. Clear kayaks offer the perfect vantage point, and BK Adventure has plenty of them.

“We have the largest fleet of see-through kayaks in the county,” Sandra added.

In addition to the see-throughs, BK Adventure’s fleet includes traditional kayaks, family-friendly rafts and even stand-up paddleboards.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for as many people to see this sight,” Sandra said.

Tours, which last from an hour and a half to three hours, launch on the Indian River near Cocoa Beach and in Titusville. They are popular with individuals and families, as well as with groups like bachelorette parties.

The experience is so wondrous that it has served as background for momentous occasions.

“We have even had a few proposals on our sunset tour,” Sandra said.
