Many Running Zone races feature free kids runs, encouraging the entire family to get involved.

Not all dads are alike. Some may prefer burgers and beer for Father’s Day while others may prefer fine wine and a filet. Whatever the dad in your life desires on June 18, maybe he could use some inspiration for the year ahead. The gift of a Running Zone Foundation “Run Brevard” race series registration could be the catalyst to inspire a healthier lifestyle for him and the whole family.

Cliff Graham got serious about running a little over 10 years ago.

“I wasn’t happy with myself,” says the Executive Director of Operations and Maintenance at the Melbourne Orlando International Airport. “When I started running, it was so hard. I wanted to get better. A friend asked if I wanted to sign up for a race.”

Graham calls the Melbourne running community, “The most inclusive group out there,”  highlighting that everyone does their best at their own pace. He adds, to get started, “Really, all you need is a pair of shoes.”

As the father of two grown children, when asked if he thinks dads would appreciate a Running Zone race series entry for Father’s Day, Graham replied positively, “Yes, particularly if it comes from their kids,” stressing that their support and encouragement is powerful.

“And it’s a family thing too, right?” he added, pointing to the fact that many families have caught the wave and signed up for fitness events together.

When he started running in his 40s, Graham said, “It reminded me of my youth. I didn’t know I could still have these feelings. Now, I’m the old guy out there and I love it!”

So how does a race series work and how do you register for it?

Six things to know about Running Zone’s “Run Brevard” Series:

  1. This year’s series offers seven fun and family friendly events including three 5Ks, one 3K and three 2-milers. Every event includes a separate free race for kids under 12 years old.
  2. The events are spread out from July to May so they offer the opportunity to stay focused on your fitness goals for almost a whole year.
  3. Every race benefits a local charitable organization, such as Family Promise and local high school running programs. Running Zone Foundation, a non-profit organization, hosts 16 events every year, all for the benefit of local community programs. Their total local donations since 2003 exceeds $1.2M dollars.
  4. Every race has costumes, free food, beer for participants 21 and over, music, photo-opps, t-shirts, finisher medals and great prizes.
  5. You are your most important opponent. Even if you don’t win a race or place in your age group, it can be exciting to see your time and your place improve. The races are professionally timed by Running Zone Race Management and feature live results and finisher videos.
  6. Most importantly, there is no pressure! More than half the participants in any event will walk or walk/run the race. The key is simply to have fun and take a step in a healthy direction.
